When most people think of a career in insurance, typically a job as an agent comes to mind. Not a good fit for you? While an agent is undoubtedly an excellent career choice, there are many alternatives that are less known. Anyone can find a position that matches up with his/her skillset fairly easily!

Would one of these be a suitable choice for you? After browsing this list you can research openings and salary expectations online for the job titles that interest you.

Here are some of the insurance industry’s top job titles and their descriptions.

1. Underwriter

Each time a policy application is submitted, it must be evaluated by an underwriter. The underwriter calculates the risk associated with the person, property, etc. being insured and determines what coverage the company can offer and for what premium. For example, an underwriter working with a life insurance policy will evaluate the age and health profile of the applicant to assess risk for the company.

2. Claims Adjuster

When a claim is made by a policyholder, a claims adjuster assesses damages and the circumstances surrounding the claim to decide how much the insurance company should pay for the loss. Claims adjusters can specialize in all types of claims from homeowner’s claims to automotive. Are you a good negotiator? This might be the job for you.

3. Customer Service Representative

Like most service industries, customer service reps are essential to any insurance agency. Reps can typically work for corporate or for an agent in his/her office. Service reps are in charge of tasks ranging from setting appointments for the agent to running payments and confirming details with clients. If you love people and problem-solving, this is an excellent job.

4. Claims Clerk

Unsurprisingly, claims take a lot of paperwork to process and settle. If your strengths involve administrative work and attention to detail, a claims clerk ensures policies are modified appropriately and claims are processed accurately and promptly. A claims clerk keeps everything running smoothly.

5. Actuary

One insurance job you may have never heard of is an actuary. Why do insurance companies use actuaries? Many calculations are used to establish the cost of premiums. Actuaries must calculate complex statistical probabilities and closely track overhead costs to make sure the estimation of premiums adequately returns a profit for the insurance company. This is a job that requires a strong mathematical aptitude and typically an advanced degree. Actuaries earn a fairly strong salary as well!

6. Insurance Agent

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the most well-known insurance job. Insurance agents focus heavily on sales and client relationships. Agents typically have the freedom to grow their own agencies and hire employees as their businesses grow. This career requires some training and licensing through your state. If you enjoy the challenge of sales and are skilled at maintaining and cultivating strong relationships, an agent is a fantastic career option.

These are just some of the most common careers in the insurance industry. There are many options for someone looking for an insurance job but may not know the opportunities available.

Whether your strengths are in sales, administration, customer service, finance, or organization, there’s a career for everyone interested in the insurance field.
